Venus Williams Reportedly Found At Fault for A Fatal Car Crash

TMZ says that the police in Palm Beach Gardens, FL are pointing fingers at Venus Williams, tennis star and soon-to-be aunt to a tennis-playing Reddit baby, for causing a car crash that sent a 78-year-old man to the ICU where he later died. The crash is still under investigation and so far Venus hasn’t been charged with anything and she hasn’t been issued any kind of traffic violations.

The police report states that on June 9 the 78-year-old man, Jerome Barson, was riding in the passenger seat of a Hyundai Accent, which his wife, Linda Barson, was driving. Linda told cops that she was driving into an intersection after the light turned green when Venus’ Toyota Sequoia “darted” in front of them. Linda didn’t have time to stop and crashed into Venus. Venus told the cops that she was trying to make it through the six-lane intersection but traffic was backed up and so she was stuck at the intersection. TMZ posted a diagram from the police report showing how the crash went down:

Jerome suffered head injuries and was taken to the hospital. He didn’t make it and died two weeks later. Linda was also injured and ended up with broken bones. Venus wasn’t injured at all.

The police report says that there’s no evidence to lead them to believe that Venus was boozed up or on drugs at the time of the crash. They also don’t think she was texting or using her phone. But they did say that the crash is her fault for violating the right of way of the other driver. Venus’ lawyer released this statement after the news got out:

“Ms. Williams entered the intersection on a green light. The police report estimates that Ms. Williams was traveling at 5 mph when Mrs. Barson crashed into her. Authorities did not issue Ms. Williams with any citations or traffic violations. This is an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one.”

Lawsuits are definitely going to come out of this and I’m sure Caitlyn Jenner has already texted Venus her lawyers’ info.

Doesn’t Venus know the saying: DON’T BLOCK THE BOX (which sounds like the vagina and b-hole version of cockblocking, but this isn’t the post for that kind of talk). Even after looking at that diagram, I wasn’t quite sure how exactly this terrible crash happened, but it kind of made sense to me after I reminded myself that the Barsons were in a small car and Venus was driving a giant Toyota Sequoia, which is “The Rock on Jason Momoa’s shoulders” of SUVs.

I accept Rachel Dolezal as a sista before I will ever accept Bruce as a sister.

  2. Doll Parts

What does “don’t block the box” mean??? We didn’t say that in WI.

  3. Bob White the bird.

Unfortunate. But if she wasn’t inhibited it could have been any one of us. Thoughts for the family. I’m sure she feels the same.

  4. BlairBear

I used to be so terrified of causing a fatal accident when I used to drive. Can’t imagine the guilt and trauma and million what ifs after accidentally killing somebody.

  5. BlairBear

Because it’s a slippery slope to saying somebody doesn’t deserve compassion and acceptance to many people don’t deserve compassion and acceptance. Also you can despise a person and still consider them by their gender/name of choice. I can’t stand Bruce/Caitlin but she deserves to be considered as Caitlin the terrible human being.

  6. Pit Bully

Venus probably moved her car up in the inter
section (going 5 mph), which might’ve put her in the path of the old couple driving, which they weren’t expecting.

  7. I always hate hearing about car accidents. Celebrity or not, car accidents are one of the horrifically common ways of injury/death in our generation. It’s almost never funny and always exploitative to even speculate.

  8. Pit Bully

Actually, the way I read it, Venus had been caught in the intersection while the light changed from green to red. The light where elderly man and his wife were coming through was green, they were probably going to try to go through a gap in front of Venus’ car, when she suddenly started driving because, perhaps, the cars in front of her had moved.

I could be wrong. I don’t know. The old woman was almost definitely driving too fast.

  9. Charlie Hunnam's butt

the way i see it, it doesn’t matter what was in front of the car making the turn, it could have been a child, a construction worker placing detour signs, a first
responder treating a patient, or a damn wall.

Sure the person that got stuck on the box could get a ticket, but the other driver (and any driver for that matter) is ultimately responsible for controlling and maneuvering their own car. Is not like someone drove against traffic or got in their lane and pushed them aside. The car turning had time to look ahead of traffic and make a choice. The turning car is actually the one that cause the accident by driving into the car in front of them.

I was the passenger in my car accident that was hit by an Expedition on driver’s side in same intersection scenario. My driver suffered cracked ribs. I cracked my skull on something, lost consciousness in ambulance and am now blind in left eye due to skull fragments landing on optic nerve. And, of course, lucky to be alive. So it is possible the driver can be closest to impact but suffer less injuries.

The article says the police report says it was Venus’ fault but there was no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved or that she was texting or using her phone.

Where I live, I’ve always heard that if one driver was violating the law at the time of the accident, they are assumed to be at fault. As in if this happened here, if Venus started through the intersection when she obviously couldn’t clear it before the light turned red, that would be a traffic violation that would put her at fault in the accident. Even her publicist’s statement sounds like she pulled into the intersection without being able to clear it due to traffic; the rest of the article sounds like she then tried to pass through the intersection when the collision occurred.

I usually enter the box only if there’s space enough for 1 car. But by the time there’s such a space, someone turning right take it. You’ll still end up in the box when the light turns red.

  13. doorhandle

my first luxury as a rich person would be to hire a driver.

  14. It’s weird to me that a person approaching the intersection doesn’t have accountability to watch ahead. They must have been traveling at a good clip (don’t know the speed limit in this area) to not have time to stop. It seems like an unfortunate accident, but unfair that she is being painted in a way that makes it seem like she’s going to walk away unscathed. The injuries to the couple seem pretty substantial for anything slow speed, though I understand they’re elderly.

I’m sure it’s just how it’s being covered, but something feels dark about it. The “darting” comment, the tone of the wife, I dunno. It sucks for everyone involved. I just hate the idea that it might be more sensational because Venus was involved.

  15. Charlie Hunnam's butt

this is my exception as well: why does Jenner deserve compassion and acceptance when he doesn’t show ANY acceptance towards gay rights and their right to marry like any other human being?

You don’t get to benefit from what other people fought for..and then shit on them. Doesn’t work that way

  16. Immodest Goddess

    LOL! You described it perfectly!

  17. apricot ashtray

I feel the same and not sorry.

  18. Charlie Hunnam's butt

yeah, I don’t buy the “they didn’t have time to stop” claim. Unless they were speeding and/or not paying attention.

Also, if the lady was trying to make a right turn wouldn’t it make sense that the driver’s side get most if not all of the impact and NOT the passenger’s side?

  19. Charlie Hunnam's butt

How does anyone crash into another car right in front of them going at 5mph? wouldn’t be common sense NOT to drive towards someone RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU?

if you’re siting there waiting for the light to change, you have time to see there is someone right in front of you. What if this wasn’t a car but a person crossing the street? even if you have the right of way on a green light the driver is always responsible to pay attention to what is in front of them.

  20. FunkAnarchy84 Ⓐ

I don’t know. I hope not though. :/ It was an accident and Venus didn’t intend for what happened to happen. 🙁

  21. FunkAnarchy84 Ⓐ

Headline reads Venus was at fault but article suggests it was just a terrible accident that led to someone’s death. 🙁

  22. right, and sometimes the cars in front of you are moving when you enter the intersection but then stop after you’ve entered, it totally sucks, but generally the cross traffic just honks a bunch like there’s anywhere for the person to go.

  23. Immodest Goddess

Well of course, there’s that too.

  24. yeah, you really shouldn’t swerve around cars that are stopped and those middle lanes are for making left turns, not passing cars.

  25. Immodest Goddess

Oh no. People tend to dismiss jaywalking but that can lead to serious accidents
