Chanel Sort Of Apologized For Racially Profiling Gabourey Sidibe

Phenomenal woman, Gabourey Sidibe, was just trying to buy some glasses at the Chanel store in Chicago. She’s a movie/television star – it’s not like she couldn’t afford to shop there, but nonetheless, Chanel should be happy anyone wants to walk their ass into their janky hut. They haven’t been relevant since Jackie O. (I kid, how would I know? This shirt I’m wearing is probably from Savers.) Gabby says that the counter bitch pulled a Michael K’s favorite scene from Pretty Woman on her.

In an essay in less-phenomenal-but-still-a-woman Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter, Chanel issued an apology, but it sounded like sarcasm. It sounds like it was written by some sneering, yet fashionable stick figure, while someone else in the office suggested Gabby call a WAH-mbulance and everyone laughed like evil hyenas.

Page Six reports that when Gabby inquired about glasses, the sales creature told her that they didn’t carry optical specs and referred her to the discount store across the street. Gabby was on to her racist bullshit. (Chanel actually put one of their uppity stores near a discount store? Coco is rolling her grave.)

“I’d love to pretend she was being polite, and I’m sure she would love to pretend she was polite, but she was actually condescending. … I knew what she was doing. She had decided after a single look at me that I wasn’t there to spend any money.”

Instead of wasting her time arguing with snotty bigots, Gabby went to her laptop and wrote an essay. Apparently, this happens to her a lot and she’s never sure whether it’s because she’s black or because she’s Rubenesque. Try adding “gay” to that mix, baby! Go for the three-fer and twirl even faster on all of your haters!

Sidibe says her weight has played a part in people profiling her, too. “I suspect it’s because I’m black, but it could also be because I’m fat. Maybe my whole life, every time I thought someone was being racist, they were actually mistreating me because I’m fat. That sucks too. That’s not OK.”

Agreed. Well, someone at Chanel can endure Lena Dunham long enough to read Lenny. And because brands will only consent to care when celebrities (or people with enough followers on social media) have an issue with their behavior, they issued an apology. But, as I said up top, it sounds like it was written in the font called “Sarcastic Smirk.

Following the publication of Sidibe’s essay, Chanel issued an apology, saying, “We are sorry that she felt unwelcome and offended. We took her words very seriously and immediately investigated to understand what happened, knowing that this is absolutely not in line with the high standards that Chanel wishes to provide to our customers.”

I’m not seeing any sort of mention of a Chanel suit proudly made in her size being sent to Gabby, or even a bottle of Chanel No. 5. This apology is totally written by Saleswoman #2 from Pretty Woman, pre-Julia Roberts getting My Fair Lady-ed, until Gabby gets some free shit.

I don’t get it either, just because they are wearing some all black uniform standing inside a building decorated with shit, but once they step outside the door they are dirt poor as hell.
My friend worked for one of these fashion stores and she was good, she sold around $30-60k worth of merchandise a week.
She told me that there is a bar where all the “Hype and in the scene” people who work for Versace, D&C, Channel etc go to after work to drink and to be seeing, and some of them order one $14 cocktail and stay on it for the whole 4 hours, taking little sips at a time.
they head home to some shared tatty house with 6 roommates and eat canned baked beans.
I was laughing, because I normally drink 5 cocktails within the first hour.
These are the same bitches who judge us when i walk into LV or Channel or Prada and they look you up and down.
Its like, bitch I make more money than you, sorry but you just work in a shop!

  2. You Ain't No Sanjaya

Maybe she felt it was “discount” because it wasn’t designer?

  3. You Ain't No Sanjaya

Chanel sunglasses that sell for 300 dollars probably cost 3 dollars in raw materials. So being rude to people who you think might “steal” is really such bullshit, because even if she did steal some glasses, the company would not be out much.

Fuck those people and live your life! ❤️❤️

  5. GothyMcGotha

Hugs Debbie. People are fucktards so often it’s disappointing.

  6. GothyMcGotha

I love Wednesday Addams. She would have put them in her place and placed a curse on them.

  7. GothyMcGotha

Uncle Karl must have written that fauxpology.

  8. GothyMcGotha

Oh, that must have been so satisfying!

  9. GothyMcGotha

Seriously, I don’t get it. They’re on the other side of the counter so as far as I know, they’re probably itching for a commission and possibly struggling to pay rent. Is it so hard to not be a dick?

Many moons ago, I saved up enough money to buy my mom a really nice bag for Mother’s Day. I went to the store and even though I had cash in hand, the sales people wouldn’t acknowledge my presence. They said hello to the older people who walked in after me and bypassed me despite my asking for help. Yeah, I was a college kid wearing beat up Doc Martens, but it was still so rude. I ended up walking out and going to a competing store across the way. The sales lady was so kind that I remember her even though it’s been almost 20 years.

  11. You discriminate by profiling, dumbarse. And it’s more about class than race or obesity.

  13. Good luck in the Semi-finals! Your Spurs are facing my Warriors, it should be a great series. 😉

  14. omg….that is the best solution!!!

  15. CandyPerfumeGirl

what bothers me is the “you shouldnt have profiled cause her she is rich” narrative. Like sure we would understand if you profiled an average person coming to your store. When in fact it is never ok to profile anyone and these assholes should treat everyone with dignity.

  16. Yep, sounds like the “discount” part is BS.

  17. it was a strange situation
it was the first time that i had met somebody that was outright rude & critical to me….. immediately….without getting to know me for 5 mins before passing judgement on who i am as a person
And it was because he didn’t like my looks ( im am not a raving beauty…just an average person…attractive… to some more than others)
i think the real reason is he was jealous his mate was inlove & also that he wouldn’t fuck me so in his eyes i was a useless piece of meat
He is mega cunt ….on all counts….lol

  18. omg….that is the best solution!!!

  19. I just say: Oh hi, I’ll let you know when I need help.

  20. “We are sorry that she felt unwelcome and offended” “She”? It’s Ms. Sidibe for you. When will they learn that any person in a cheap T-shirt could be a billionaire and even if they aren’t rich, white and thin, you should treat them properly!

  21. craigypants

seriously that’s what will be next a fart tax.

  22. Nah, people at sephora or places like Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales etc may make minimum or a little more than that (entry positions only) but the flagship / branch store staff do make more than the min wage. But not by a fuck ton more to a point where they’re rich. They just get better commissions.

  23. Herman Reyes

But like, aren’t their salespeople making minimum wage?

  24. Tell them “I can lose weight. How are you going to stop being an asshole?”

  25. David Abbot

Well, profiling is a type of discrimination. I used to work at a shop and I did get a lot of people that just wasted my time or walked around acting like they were shoplifting. It wasn’t racial. The only black people that came to the shop were good customers. But it was an antique shop and we would get people trying to sell crap to pay their phone bill. Or they were trying to find out what prices were and then they would say “My grandma has all this stuff” and you knew they were just trying to find out what it was worth so they could steal it from their poor grandma.
Working at a shop does suck because people think you’re there to chat with them but really there is actually work to do. If the person is buying or might potentially buy that is one thing but people go in shops to look like it’s a museum,
None of that excuses what they did. They should recognize her. But it’s not even about that. Anyone that comes in looking for glasses should be given the same service. If she asked for prescription lenses and they don’t sell that, then instead of trying to send her to some discount shop maybe they should try to sell her a case for her glasses. I would start trying to sell her something and then that usually gives the customer the clue that it’s a store and not a place where you hang out. Most people that aren’t going to buy anything will leave when you start being not pushy but making it about selling.
I only told people to leave maybe five times in about three years and none of it was racial. They were all white and they all did something that went beyond the bounds of what I had to deal with.
